Wildflower 'Ox Eye Daisy'

The Ox-eye Daisy is a classic and much-loved perennial wildflower, bringing a cheerful, rustic charm to any garden space. It produces tall, slender stems that rise from a low clump of foliage, each topped with a single, iconic daisy flower. The blooms feature a bright, sunny yellow central disc surrounded by a ring of crisp white petals and are a familiar and welcome sight in meadows and cottage gardens. They are also a superb and easily accessible source of nectar for a wide array of pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

For best results, Ox-eye Daisy seeds can be started in seed trays under cover or sown directly onto bare soil where they are to flower. The seeds require light to germinate, so scatter them on the surface of moist compost and press them in gently, but do not cover them with soil. If starting in trays, keep them in a bright spot. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be pricked out into individual pots, grown on, and gradually acclimatised to outdoor conditions before planting out.

Choose a final planting position in full sun in any average, well-drained soil; this wildflower is very adaptable and thrives without rich soil or additional feeding. Space the young plants or thin any directly sown seedlings to about 30cm apart to allow them room to develop into healthy clumps. Water them well until they are fully established, after which they are very drought-tolerant. You can deadhead the faded flowers to encourage more blooms, or leave them to set seed and allow the plant to naturalise.
