Kniphofia Red Hot Poker is an early flowering variety that blooms from July to September, adding height to the back of borders and looking particularly splendid when planted en masse. These outdoor plants get their common name from the fiery red and yellow shades of the flowers, which grow on spikes resembling a Red Hot Poker.

Sow Kniphofia seeds from March to April, lightly cover and place in a warm place such as a propagator at 18-20C. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots before hardening them off gradually and planting outside after the risk of frost has passed. Leave 25cm spacing between plants. Choose a spot in full sun in moist but well-draining soil. Water Red Hot Pokers routinely, particularly during dry spells but ensure the soil doesn’t become waterlogged. Remove spent blooms regularly to keep the plant looking its best and prolong the flowering period.
